Day trip to Leerdam
8th May 2008

The little town of Leerdam is our destination this summer!
An all inclusive programme has been organised for You

We are very fortunate to have an invitation from Frits and Irene Wijnants, the new managers of the Hofje van Aerden in Leerdam to visit them.
A Hofje is identical to the Almhouses of England: established from about the 14thC by wealthy merchants or families as a way of helping the less fortunate and poor Protestant members of their communities and, assuring themselves of a place in Heaven.
This Hofje we are going to visit was set up with a legacy left by Maria Ponderus (1672-1764 ) widow of Pieter van Aerden, lawyer from The Hague. The building was completed in 1772 and the Board hung the complete collection of paintings gathered by Pieter van Aerden during his lifetime in the main rooms. Amazingly, this collection is intact and our guide will show it to us and explain in greater detail the history of the Hofje and the Family, the present running of the place (6 single ladies live there at the moment) and their plans for the future. Following extensive renovations the Hofje was re-opened in 1977 by Princess Margriet.

At Lunchtime we are going to enjoy a 2hrs cruise on the river Linge with Lunch provided!

The picturesque town of Leerdam, on the Linge river in South Holland has been home to the Royal Leerdam Glassworks for 130 years. Crystal is a very special type of glass made from silver sand, red lead oxide and potash, thus giving it a structure that’s suitable for cutting and engraving and a greater brilliance than ordinary glass. In Leerdam the mouth-blown, hand-shaped or moulded, in pear wood moulds, crystal is of a superior quality with 30% lead content.
Our Guide will take us round the Factory and the Museum which are within walking distance of each other along the Lingedijk. The Museum was established in 1953 and has a beautiful and extensive collection of items from about the 1900’s to the present day.
There is a shop where you might just find that especially beautiful piece! And back along the Linge and into the little town, there are about ten more Galleries to enjoy.

An outing to appeal to everyone: the Great Outdoors, History and Art in the form of beautiful Dutch painting: Frans Hals, Pieter Claesz, Ter Borch, van Ruysdael, Cornelis de Heem. in the Hofje... and contemporary Crystal work.

Dutch Primitives: guided tour of the exhibition at the
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam

20th May 2008 at 11.30
The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam is holding a unique exhibition on Dutch Primitives, presenting a survey of the infancy of Dutch painting during the 15th and 16th centuries. On show are masterpieces from the Museum’s exceptional collection of late Middle Age paintings as well as rare loans from The Netherlands and other countries around the world. Objects and sculptures that can be seen in the paintings are also on show. The exhibition gives a good impression of daily life in the late Middle Ages.
Given the fragility of the panels, it is very unlikely that they can ever be mounted again in the future.
As this period is our guide’s favourite period, this tour should be a treat!
After the exhibition, we can have lunch in the museum café (soups, salads, sandwiches at reasonable prices).

June coffee morning on Scheveningen beach
Tuesday 3rd June 2008

With summer on our doorstep, we thought Scheveningen would be the ideal location for our closing coffee morning. The Oase Beach Club is on the Zwarte Pad, a relatively wilder area on the northern side of the beach, on the other side of the Pier. Bus and tram lines terminate in front of the Oase Beach Club, it is easily accessible by tram, bus or car. Weather permitting, we will sit outside on one of the terraces and enjoy the sunshine under a large parasol. Unfavourable weather will take us indoors where we can watch the sea and the dunes, gathered around the fire.
Come along for this last coffee morning of the season and share your holiday plans! There is no need to book your place.

Bouquet secrets:
summer flower arranging workshop

Tuesday 10th June 2008
Inspired by the display of flowering bulbs at the Keukenhof, we have organised a three-hour summer flower arranging workshop with a specialist in Lisse, near this world famous Keukenhof. The workshop will focus on arranging seasonal flowers in a vase as opposed to making an arrangement on an oasis. Marjan will show you how to create your own harmonious bouquet: how to choose flowers and greenery according to their shapes, colours, textures; how to assemble them using special techniques and how to use other materials to create a trendy bouquet. At the end of the session, you will take your beautiful creation back home in the glass vase provided by the florist, having acquired a knowledge that will inspire you next time you visit your local florist or pick flowers from your own garden.
